Experience the morning market
The Ortigia market is a daily show: the vendors' cries, the fish stalls, tastings of cheese and olives. Go before noon and have a savoury "breakfast" among the stalls.
Boat tour around the island
Every day, excursions leave the Great Harbour and the Marina to sail around Ortigia and reach the sea caves along the coast. Seeing the walls and Maniace Castle from the water completely changes your view of the island.
Kayaking and snorkelling under the walls
The waters around the island's tip are clear and full of life: by kayak or with mask and fins you can follow the fortifications and reach coves you cannot get to on foot.
A swim from the platforms
Ortigia has no sandy beaches, but in summer the bathing platforms — around Forte Vigliena and the eastern seafront — let you dive into deep, crystal-clear water steps from the centre.
The Sicilian puppet theatre
The Opera dei Pupi is UNESCO intangible heritage: in Ortigia, puppeteer families still stage the paladins of France in small historic theatres. A show that enchants adults and children alike.
Sunset aperitivo on the Lungomare Alfeo
The island's best-loved ritual: a table over the Great Harbour, the sun setting behind the Hyblaean mountains and golden light on the facades. Arrive early — the best seats go fast.
Ortigia by night
After dinner the island changes skin: the illuminated facades of Piazza Duomo, the alleys of the Giudecca, music in the courtyards. The night walk is an experience in itself, safe and full of atmosphere.
The Neapolis Archaeological Park
A 20-minute walk from Ortigia, the Greek Theatre, the Ear of Dionysius and the Latomie complete the story of ancient Syracuse. Combine it with the island if you have an extra day.
